Sir John Herschel \u2013 (1792 – 1871)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Nascido em Slough, Inglaterra, em 1792, John Fredrick William Herschel foi um astr\u00f3nomo, cientista, matem\u00e1tico, fot\u00f3grafo e inventor brit\u00e2nico. Foi o \u00fanico filho do famoso astr\u00f3nomo William Herschel. Formou-se em Eton College e depois foi aluno na Universidade de Cambridge, onde estudou matem\u00e1tica juntamente com Charles Babbage, conhecido por ser o inventor do computador digital. <\/p>\n

Ap\u00f3s terminar os seus estudos em Cambridge, Herschel trabalhou ao lado do seu pai no campo da astronomia, o que por sua vez despertou o seu interesse na \u00f3tica e no uso de grandes telesc\u00f3pios para observar o c\u00e9u noturno. Ao utilizar estes telesc\u00f3pios, descobriu e catalogou centenas de nebulosas e milhares de estrelas duplas, o que lhe valeu o prestigioso pr\u00e9mio de ouro da Sociedade Astron\u00f3mica Real em 1826. No ano seguinte, foi eleito presidente da sociedade. <\/p>\n

Para catalogar o c\u00e9u que n\u00e3o era vis\u00edvel desde Inglaterra, Herschel viajou para a \u00c1frica do Sul em 1834, onde p\u00f4de realizar observa\u00e7\u00f5es astron\u00f3micas de estrelas e eventos c\u00f3smicos no hemisf\u00e9rio sul. Durante os quatro anos que passou na \u00c1frica do Sul, Herschel completou extensos estudos sobre o c\u00e9u austral, criando assim o primeiro cat\u00e1logo completo dos c\u00e9us da Terra.  <\/p>\n

Ao regressar a Inglaterra da \u00c1frica do Sul, Herschel concentrou os seus interesses cient\u00edficos na qu\u00edmica e na fotografia, tendo sido pioneiro de um processo de obten\u00e7\u00e3o de imagens chamado cianotipo em 1842. Usando a oxida\u00e7\u00e3o do ferro, este m\u00e9todo rec\u00e9m-inventado come\u00e7ou a ser utilizado habitualmente em plantas arquitet\u00f3nicas. A sua popularidade inspirou outros inventores como Henry Fox Talbot e Anna Atkins a usar processos qu\u00edmicos nas suas explora\u00e7\u00f5es no campo da fotografia, cada vez mais popular. <\/p>\n

Mais tarde na sua vida, Herschel mudou-se para fora de Londres para se dedicar a v\u00e1rios experimentos e continuou a escrever publica\u00e7\u00f5es que partilhava com a comunidade cient\u00edfica, sendo especialmente not\u00e1veis as suas descobertas sobre as estrelas e outros fen\u00f3menos celestes. <\/p>\n

Em 1871, faleceu em sua casa em Kent e foi enterrado com todas as honras na Abadia de Westminster em Londres. O seu t\u00famulo encontra-se ao lado dos de outros famosos cientistas brit\u00e2nicos como Isaac Newton e Charles Darwin, que foi enterrado ao lado de Herschel em 1882.<\/p>\n

As contribui\u00e7\u00f5es de Sir John Herschel para os cuidados oculares<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Combinando o seu conhecimento sobre lentes e reflex\u00e3o da luz, John Herschel prop\u00f4s um dos primeiros designs de lentes de contacto a n\u00edvel mundial em 1827, e documentou outra investiga\u00e7\u00e3o sobre a vis\u00e3o, que inclui:  <\/p>\n

  • Estudos sobre diferentes irregularidades da c\u00f3rnea e o astigmatismo <\/li>\n
  • Sugest\u00f5es sobre moer vidro para formar uma lente redonda que pudesse encaixar na superf\u00edcie da c\u00f3rnea o mais pr\u00f3ximo poss\u00edvel, juntamente com um preenchimento de gel que pudesse ser colocado entre o olho e a lente <\/li>\n
  • Propostas sobre a cria\u00e7\u00e3o de um molde f\u00edsico do olho para oferecer um ajuste corneano preciso usando um ‘meio transparente’ <\/li>\n
  • Causas investigadas sobre o daltonismo <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Infelizmente, n\u00e3o havia tecnologia dispon\u00edvel na \u00e9poca para criar prot\u00f3tipos do modelo de lente de Herschel. No entanto, as suas teorias constitu\u00edram um s\u00f3lido ponto de partida para investiga\u00e7\u00f5es futuras e avan\u00e7os de outros vision\u00e1rios das lentes de contacto.<\/p>\n

    Embora John Herschel tenha sido uma figura essencial no conceito inicial das lentes de contacto, as suas principais contribui\u00e7\u00f5es cient\u00edficas centraram-se em avan\u00e7os na astronomia, meteorologia e fotografia.     • \u00c9 creditado como a primeira pessoa a usar a palavra ‘fotografia’ e a cunhar os termos ‘negativo’, ‘positivo’ e ‘instant\u00e2neo’ para descrever fotos <\/li>\n
    • Inventou o cianotipo, tamb\u00e9m conhecido como processo blueprint, um m\u00e9todo sem c\u00e2mara que usa solu\u00e7\u00f5es de sais de ferro, luz UV e \u00e1gua para criar uma imagem est\u00e1tica atrav\u00e9s da oxida\u00e7\u00e3o   <\/li>\n
    • Construiu o primeiro telesc\u00f3pio de grande escala no hemisf\u00e9rio sul <\/li>\n
    • Deu oficialmente nome \u00e0s quatro luas que orbitam \u00darano e \u00e0s sete luas de Saturno  <\/li>\n
    • Inventou o actin\u00f3metro, um dispositivo usado para medir a pot\u00eancia da radia\u00e7\u00e3o solar atrav\u00e9s do uso de fot\u00f5es<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Embora Herschel tenha falecido antes de as lentes de contacto serem criadas, os seus estudos no campo da optometria e a sua proposta de uma lente baseada no molde do olho abriram caminho para que outras importantes figuras dos cuidados oculares, como F.A.
